Tyson Mao, age 22, created a stir in speed cubing circles when he became the first person to solve the Rubik’s Cube in less than two minutes while blindfolded. Tyson’s winning time – 1:58.32. That was 2005. Now, this Caltech graduate is back in the headlines – this time for his coaching skills. The speed cubing aficionado was tapped to teach actor Will Smith how to solve the Rubik’s Cube for his role in the upcoming film “The Pursuit of Happyness.” The movie, out in theaters nationwide on December 15, 2006, is based on the life of Chris Gardner, a struggling salesman who overcomes great obstacles to become a multi-millionaire stockbroker. The Rubik’s Cube plays a role in the film, too. It’s a metaphor for perseverance and determination, keys to Gardner’s ultimate success.
